La curiosidad es una parte fundamental de la naturaleza humana, pues estamos programados para aprender todo sobre nuestro entorno y sobre las personas que nos rodean. Los chismes pueden satisfacer esa curiosidad, proporcionándonos información sobre las vidas y acciones de otras personas.

El interés humano en escuchar y saber sobre chismes o información social puede explicarse desde varias perspectivas científicas y psicológicas. Si bien es importante recordar que no existe un solo motivo que explique por qué a todas las personas les gustan los chismes, lo cierto es que hay diversos factores en común y que tienen que ver con la actividad cerebral.

¿Por qué nos gusta el chisme según la ciencia?

Eduardo Calixto, neurólogo de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), ha revelado que antropológicamente existen dos tipos de chisme. El primero es el llamado «funcionalista», mismo que consiste en generar una divulgación que sirva para obtener un beneficio.

Por otro lado, el experto de la máxima casa de estudios, ha revelado que existe un segundo tipo de chisme, el interaccionista, mismo que sirve para interactuar socialmente dentro de un grupo o círculo limitado de personas, en el cual, el chisme tendrá un impacto de igual manera limitado en la mayoría de los casos.

Algunos investigadores argumentan que la inclinación hacia los chismes podría ser un vestigio de la evolución humana. En sociedades ancestrales, conocer la información sobre otros miembros del grupo podría haber tenido un valor de supervivencia, ya que podría ayudar a prevenir conflictos, tomar decisiones basadas en la reputación y mantener una cohesión social.

Por otro lado, es importante señalar que la mente humana está diseñada para procesar información social y los chismes pueden activar áreas del cerebro relacionadas con la cognición social y la empatía, además de que estimula nuestras conexiones cerebrales al provocar que se imaginen historias o conclusiones, lo que provoca la liberación de neurotransmisores de placer.

Escuchar acerca de las experiencias y acciones de otras personas puede ayudarnos a comprender mejor las dinámicas humanas y a practicar la empatía. Es importante destacar que, si bien el interés en los chismes es común, la intensidad y la forma en que se participa en el chisme pueden variar ampliamente de una persona a otra.

Algunas personas pueden estar más interesadas en los aspectos sociales y de conexión, mientras que otras pueden estar más enfocadas en la intriga o el entretenimiento. En última instancia, la atracción hacia los chismes es un comportamiento complejo y multifacético que puede tener raíces en la biología, la cultura y la psicología individual humana.
